Val Robertson, MICHT, MCThA, TAth

Background
I have been qualified as a Reflexologist and Aromatherapist since 1996, and hold a City & Guilds Diploma in Aromatherapy and VAI Diploma in Reflexology.  In addition, I am also a Usui Reiki II Practitioner.   I am a Member of the International Council of Holistic Therapists and Complementary Therapists Association.  Members of these associations must be fully trained, carry professional insurance and are bound by a strict Code of Ethics.

In addition to my professional qualifications, my background experience includes 10 years working in the NHS where I picked up quite an extensive medical knowledge through my interest in medical conditions and researching how complementary health can help or alleviate certain symptoms.

I have been practicing at The Cornmill since its opening in 1999 and constantly update my knowledge through courses and research of new information.

In October 2005, as part of my ongoing training and courses, I added an additional qualification to my portfolio.  This is Thermo Auricular Therapy, more commonly known as Hopi Ear Candling.  I will also be practising this at The Cornmill.

Therapies

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy combines the senses of smell and touch to provide a therapeutic treatment.  Massage is the ultimate feel good therapy and when combined with aromatic oils, the healing effect is more profound.  There are a wide range of benefits from this type of treatment including

  • Boosting the immune system
  • Reducing anxiety and stress
  • Relieving muscular tension and knots
  • Reducing aches and pains
  • Stimulating circulation

Reflexology
Although the origins of reflexology date back to the ancient Middle East, it wasn’t introduced as a therapy in the west until the early part of the twentieth century.  Reflexology works on the feet as a method for activating the body’s own natural healing powers.  It is a safe natural therapy and once your body is in tune, regular treatments can help maintain health and well-being.  Reflexology can help with a wide range of disorders and is beneficial for

  • Back and neck pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Insomnia
  • Stress related conditions

Reiki
Reiki is a versatile healing system based on the channelling of the life force energy that circulates throughout the body.  Reiki heals by channelling the energy via the Practitioner’s hands to the affected part of the energy field, thus breaking down any blockages and rebalancing the body.  You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment, which can feel like a warm glow that flows through you and surrounds you.  It is therefore a gentle safe and very effective healing technique that stimulates and accelerates the body to heal itself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and is suitable for people of all ages.

Thermo-Auricular Therapy (Hopi Ear Candles)

This ancient and natural therapy has been handed down to us through time by many civilisations. Initially they were probably used for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual level but much later the amazing efficiency of the candles on a physical level was discovered.

When the candle is lit and gently inserted in the ear, a moderate suction action is created, lightly manipulating the tympanic membrane.  The treatment can stimulate the ear, nose and throat canals, thus reducing congestion and bringing about a feeling of tranquillity, comfort and relief.

The physical benefits of this treatment can help the following conditions:

                        *           Migraines and headaches
                        *           Balance and Meniere’s disease
                        *           Snoring
                        *           Tonsillitis
                        *           Cold and Flu
                        *           Noises in the ear, e.g. tinnitus
                        *           Reduces wax build up
                        *           Increases blood flow to the treated area, promoting necessary healing

The psychological benefits include:

                         *           Relaxing and calming in times of stress
                         *           Creates a balanced feeling
                         *           Aids alertness, concentration and clearer thinking

Unique benefits
My clients gain several extra benefits from the therapies I offer.  Firstly, creating the right atmosphere to aid relaxation is an important part of the treatment.  I therefore always ensure that the treatment room is warm and comfortable, with soft lighting and relaxation music.  All clients are offered a glass of water at the end of the treatment, in order to assist with the elimination of toxins, which may occur as a result of treatment.

Additionally, I always carry out an in-depth initial consultation so I can not only assess the condition or problem, but also build up a good relationship and understand your long-term requirements.
Even though a client may book a specific therapy, I can combine a little of another one if I feel this will help in the treatment.  For instance, the healing energy of Reiki will automatically come through to an area of the body where it is needed.  During an aromatherapy massage I may also sometimes include some reflexology if there is an area of the body that would benefit from an extra ‘boost.’

These benefits mean that treatments are tailored to the individual’s needs and provide an enhanced sense of well-being.
