Since qualifying in 1981, I have worked mainly in the NHS, but also in the USA, in Adult Mental Health and/or Neuropsychology. For 10 years I provided  the NHS adult psychology service to East Grinstead GP surgeries, and I have provided a neuropsychology service to Hurstwood Park Neurological centre for more than 15 years.  In addition, for many years I have appeared as an expert witness, for both sides of the case, in the Civil and Criminal courts.

Therapies

I offer psychological therapies for psychological problems in adults, for individuals, couples and groups, using the following approaches.

        Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

This is my primary clinical method.  CBT has been scientifically demonstrated to be the treatment of choice for most of the common psychological problems, including, but not limited to

  • Anxiety disorders (phobias, including agoraphobia; obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxieties)
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related psychological dysfunction
  • Sexual problems

I also use this approach for stopping smoking; eating management and weight reduction; stress management; pain management and coping with physical illness; developing successful studying habits; and relationship therapy for couples and parents.
Group treatment can be offered at lower rates, e.g. for eating management.

          Counselling

This can be offered when the focus of the problem is less behavioural and the client would benefit from ‘talking through’ a crisis, dilemma, major life-change or loss.

          Psychotherapy

This can be offered for deeper, or long-term problems, difficulties in interpersonal relationships and personality-based dysfunction.

Neuropsychology

This is concerned with brain functioning and I offer a service of Assessment (IQ and memory, dyslexia, brain injury or impairment etc) and Rehabilitation (following brain injury).

Unique benefits

Clinical Psychology is a mainstream, not a complementary, discipline.  The effectiveness of CBT is well established in the professional literature.  Furthermore, I monitored the progress of every NHS patient referred to me by GPs for 10 years.  Almost 90% of those who completed a course of treatment reported, and demonstrated, according to four separate criteria, clinically significant and personally meaningful improvement.  Successful outcome was achieved in four to twenty sessions, sometimes more, with an average of about ten.  Treatment gains were maintained or improved at follow-up.

Appointments

Cornmill sessions take place on Fridays, and Wednesday evenings, Tuesdays, 10.00 am until 8pm, and by special arrangement at other times and venues.  A consultation ‘hour’ usually involves 50 minutes face-to-face.  An outline of diagnosis, length and type of treatment, and opinion of outcome can be offered in one session.

I am a registered practitioner with BUPA, PPP, Norwich Union, WPA, and other funding agencies.
